There has been so much talk about Alan Smith since he recovered from his ankle/leg break. He came back into the Man Utd team and struggled, funny that considering he’d spent 2 months or so not walking, let alone running! It takes a while to recover from a broken bone, even for superstars. But to expect them to be back to their best within 6 months or so of breaking the bone was a bit optimistic in my opinion.

He’s played some good football in the 2nd half of the season just finished. I was there for that epic Roma game, stood in the Stretford and loved every minute of it. He played well that game, amongst others. That was the sort of form he can produce, so why do they want to sell him?

I guess it comes down to money. Sell Smith, realise an asset that’s worth about £7 million so that the money men can balance their books, they need to after all, they’ve already spent close to £50 million on Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves.

But what happens if (read when) Saha gets injured again? We all saw last season that Saha was brilliant for the first half of the season, but then didn’t really manage to shake off his injuries for the 2nd half of the season. Can we really expect Solskjaer to get any younger and provide cover?

No. Man Utd need another striker, of similar quality to Saha. One that will work well with Rooney. So why sell Smith just to balance the books? If I was Ferguson, I’d keep him, get your money’s worth (or wuth in a Glaswegian accent).
